Project Overview

Ideal Contracting was awarded the structural steel package for the new Mike Ilitch School of Business, named for the late Red Wings and Tigers owner Mike Ilitch. The four-story building is located adjacent to the Little Caesars Arena at the north end of the new District Detroit neighborhood.

Ideal procured and erected approximately 1,200 tons of structural steel and metal decking in a three-month time frame. Specialty prefabricated fireproof columns were specifically detailed to ensure connection material was contained within the square steel shell and the architectural shell extended past ceiling lines.

Every detail of the building was carefully planned in a specific manner to minimize the amount of field labor on site. This included shop installation of small stub beams to minimize moment welding, changing braced connections from field welded to field bolted, as well as changing column splices from welded to bolted. The total project site was only 1.3 acres which minimized the laydown area and required precise scheduling and delivery planning.
