Serving as a trade partner to The Christman Company, Ideal Contracting provided the structural and miscellaneous steel erection for Wayne State University’s new Health Sciences Research Building in Detroit. The six-story, 160,000-square-foot facility required approximately 1,600 tons of steel and represents a major investment in the future of research and innovation on campus.
As part of our scope, Ideal also furnished and erected a new pedestrian bridge connecting the Health Sciences Research Building to Scott Hall across Canfield Street. Spanning 150 feet and weighing more than 160,000 pounds, the bridge installation presented several unique challenges, including limited workspace for on-site assembly and erection.
To overcome these constraints, the project team strategically revised the construction sequence to accommodate on-site bridge fabrication and ensure adequate structural support was in place prior to the bridge’s installation. Through careful planning and collaboration, the team successfully executed this complex lift while maintaining the project’s momentum.
