University of Michigan Leinweber Computer Science Building

Project Overview

The University of Michigan Leinweber Computer Science Building is a 6-story building addition to the Bob and Betty Beyster building on the university’s north campus. The building will house state-of-the-art facilities for the computer science and engineering students at the University of Michigan. Ideal Contracting served as the structural and miscellaneous steel erector for the project as a trade partner to Walbridge.

This steel project required approximately 1,600 tons of structural steel framing. The building was built into the side of a hill, which made site logistics challenging. This was especially true during the set-up and tear-down of the crane. Additionally, there was limited access for manlifts around the perimeter of the building. This required a significant amount of work off of the iron itself, as well as the rental of swing stages. All in all, Ideal Contracting’s steel team performed exceptionally well on the project and delivered the steel construction on schedule.
