Ideal Contracting was subcontracted for the fabrication and erection of a 150-foot tower to hold a Carillon Bell system for Oakland University, which is one of only a few in the state of Michigan. The contract was a design-assist method of delivery with a complete buy-in of the entire project team of Barton Malow, Ideal Contracting, Niagra Murano, Desai-Nasr, and Oakland University.
The team took a modularization approach to the project and built as much of the structure as possible in the shop to make erection easier. In order to erect the bell substructure, a diamond shaped vertical bracing was utilized in lieu of the traditional x-bracing to allow larger openings in the structure. Also, because of the height of the structure, the top cone with a complete roofing system was assembled on the ground and hoisted into place as one. This alleviated problems with the installation of the titanium shingles and quickened the overall completion of the project.
