The Jason Hargrove Transit Center project was a collaborative effort from Ideal Contracting, DLZ, NORR Architecture, the City of Detroit, and many other partners. The project transformed the historic Dairy Cattle Barn at the former Michigan State Fairgrounds into a new state-of-the-art transit center for local community residents to utilize and enjoy. Initial construction/demolition began in March 2023. Fast-forward to today, the site has been transformed into a buzzing transit hub that will serve tens of thousands of riders annually.
Completed in May of 2024, the Jason Hargrove Transit Center serves both Detroit Department of Transportation and SMART riders, as well as ride-share customers and those using other forms of transportation, such as MoGo bikes and scooters. The building provides convenient indoor services for transit users, bike storage, administrative space, a break room, a training room, men’s and women’s restrooms with a family/gender-neutral restroom, a security office, and a police substation. Outside of the transit center, there is a beautiful community park (Coliseum Park) with a plaza showcasing the old Coliseum’s portico entrance, and commercial spaces for future tenant growth.
The transit center has a unique design due to the neo-classical architecture of the original building, which was collaboratively brought back to life with new construction elements that mirror both modern and industrial design. The plan to adaptively reuse the Dairy Cattle Barn building and the south portico was approved by the Detroit City Council in November 2021 after they were presented with a condition assessment and feasibility study provided by the design-build team. The study was done in response to community members expressing their desire for the city to preserve these pieces of Michigan’s history. The findings of the study helped determine that the adaptive reuse of the historic Dairy Cattle building was a viable option.
The new Jason Hargrove Transit Center directly supports the Detroit Department of Transportation and the City of Detroit’s commitment to expanding its network of public transit outside of the downtown area. Located near the intersection of Eight Mile Road and Woodward Avenue, the transit center also provides necessary transportation options to support the new job growth in the surrounding neighborhood. The preservation and transformation of the Dairy Cattle Barn into the Jason Hargrove Transit Center lends itself as a symbol of the revitalization of Detroit, a symbol of its citizens working towards the future, and a nod to the history that shaped the city.
