Project Overview:

The 6-Speed RWD Transmission Plant Addition consisted of the design and construction of an 839,000-square-foot addition and renovation of the Transmission Facility, located in Toledo, Ohio. Phase I included an approximately 532,000-square foot addition to Plant 2; renovation of approximately 213,400-square feet within Plant 1, and the renovation of approximately 21,000-square feet of office area within the same plant. Phase II construction included the renovation of an additional 72,000-square feet within Plant 2.

The plant was built virtually, in 3D BIM, to resolve all the potential interferences in the design of the structure, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems before construction. To effectively manage the process, the design-build team, along with the GM project team co-located in a collaborative environment to expedite the design and decision making. The team worked together to provide BIM services with a lean integrated delivery model in order to manage cost, minimize changes, meet the project schedule, and produce a quality performance.

As a result of this fast track, integrated process, Phase I of the GM Toledo 6-Speed RWD Transmission Plant project started in May 2006 and was completed in August 2007. Phase II was completed in August 2008.
