Project Overview:
General Motors invested in Flint, Michigan with a new state-of-the-art Body Shop. Ideal Contracting was awarded the design-build structural steel fabrication and erection package for this project, which consists of a one-million-square-foot body shop addition as well as a 400,000 square-foot addition to General Assembly. The scope of work also included a 3,000-foot-long body conveyor from the new body shop to the General Assembly expansion. Combined, the Body Shop addition, General Assembly addition and trestle consists of 11,000 tons of structural steel.
As part of the design process, the estimating team determined that the most efficient and cost-effective way to erect the steel was to have two cranes working side by side. This made for a fast-paced schedule for the construction team. The Body Shop and trestle were erected within only 10 months. General Assembly, consisting of 2,700 tons of steel, was erected in just 4 months. Our team was able to stay on schedule through the entire project exceeding the client’s expectations.
