Recapping Women In Construction Week

Women in Construction (WIC) Week celebrates and promotes the role of women within the construction industry. The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) held the first WIC Week in 1998, and the weeklong celebration has since grown every year thereafter. This year’s theme was “Keys to the Future”, a nod to the strength and knowledge of women and the vital role they play in shaping the future of the construction industry.

W.I.C. Week 2024 ran from March 3rd – 9th. The Women of Ideal had a blast kicking things off on Saturday at the Women & Skilled Trades Statewide Summit! The summit, which was held at the Detroit Union Carpenters and Millwrights Skilled Training Center, provided opportunities for connection and collaboration on a variety of topics related to women in the construction industry. This included the keynote speaker, Heather Kurtenbach, who provided an impactful story about her journey to becoming an ironworker for Local 68 in Seattle, WA.

Later in the week, the Women of Ideal held an engaging panel for students and staff from several local schools. Ideal Contracting’s Jennifer Torres (Director, Construction Group) moderated the panel while Chelsey Bejarano (Assistant Project Manager) and Kate Hoetger (Operator, Local 324) participated in the discussions. Jashan Lobana (Ghafari) and Rhea Bautista (City of Detroit) joined these Ideal Contracting team members to provide the students with generous insights into their career paths and to educate them on the abundant opportunities within the construction industry. The panel was followed by a tour of the Carpenters and Millwrights Skilled Training Center and a fun, interactive trivia game for the students.

In addition to these events, we spotlighted some of the amazing members of the Women of Ideal committee.  Read more about what each team member believes is the most inspiring part about being in this group of women.

The Women of Ideal was created to empower and support the women within our organization and the construction industry as a whole. Their mission, “championing women to influence the construction industry,” has been on full display throughout Women in Construction Week 2024.  The Women of Ideal and the entire Ideal Contracting team will continue to build change in our community and connect young men and women to careers in the construction industry.
