Since our founding in 1998, Ideal Contracting has grown into one of Michigan’s leading general contractors, with expanding operations across the Midwest. As a family-owned, certified MBE headquartered in Southwest Detroit, we share with General Motors a commitment to investing in communities, creating opportunities for people, maintaining an uncompromising focus on safety, and delivering excellence through collaboration.
Our evolution into a trusted construction partner has been built on nearly three decades of performance, reliability, and lasting relationships. Among them, few have been as significant or enduring as the one between General Motors and Ideal Contracting.
History of Projects + the PDPM Program
Ideal Contracting’s first project with General Motors was the GM Romulus Bulk Fluids Tank Farm project in 1999, a contract valued at approximately $2.6 million. Just three years later, in 2002, Ideal earned its first GM Supplier of the Year Award and was awarded General Motors’ Project Delivery Program Management (PDPM) contract, which we continue to hold today.
Over the past 25 years, Ideal has had the privilege of supporting an extensive range of projects across GM facilities, from routine maintenance and infrastructure improvements to complex, multi-phase capital programs. Through the PDPM program, managed by Ideal’s Special Projects Group, we oversee projects at 12 GM locations throughout Southeast Michigan.
The work encompasses a diverse range of scopes, including roof replacements, steam line upgrades, office renovations, utility improvements, and EV charging station installations. Through decades of experience working within GM facilities, our Special Projects Group has developed a deep understanding of GM’s operational requirements, enabling the team to deliver projects safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption to ongoing operations.
In many respects, the group functions as an extension of GM’s facilities team, providing technical expertise and responsive project management. Since assuming responsibility for the PDPM program in 2002, Ideal has successfully delivered more than $1.5 billion in construction work, strengthening a relationship built on performance, trust, and a shared commitment to continuous improvement.
GM Global Tech Center Flood: Building Trust Through Action
Beyond the PDPM program, Ideal Contracting’s Construction Group has supported General Motors on numerous projects as a general contractor, bringing design-build capabilities and self-perform expertise to a wide range of initiatives. Few moments better demonstrate the strength of the relationship between GM and Ideal than the historic flooding that impacted GM’s Warren Technical Center in 2014.
As floodwaters affected portions of the campus, Ideal team members mobilized immediately to support the recovery effort. Recognizing the urgency and complexity of the situation, GM entrusted Ideal to manage a two-phase restoration program. The first phase focused on the rapid removal of flood-damaged materials and stabilization of affected facilities. The second phase centered on restoring and renovating the spaces, transforming a significant challenge into an opportunity to modernize and enhance the campus environment.
Valued at approximately $90 million, the project required extensive coordination, responsiveness, and collaboration among multiple stakeholders. Successfully delivering the recovery effort not only restored critical facilities but also reinforced the trust that had been built between General Motors and Ideal Contracting over many years.
In addition to supporting GM through its Construction Group, Ideal’s Steel Group has played an important role in several transformative projects across the automaker’s portfolio. As one of the nation’s largest steel erectors, Ideal self-performs the erection of structural and miscellaneous steel and precast concrete, working alongside construction managers and general contractors to help deliver complex industrial and manufacturing facilities.
Twenty-Time Supplier of the Year Award Recipient
When Ideal Contracting received its first GM Supplier of the Year Award in 2002, our team viewed the recognition as both an honor and a challenge to continue striving for excellence. More than two decades later, that commitment has resulted in 20 Supplier of the Year Awards, an achievement made possible through thousands of successfully completed projects, countless hours of planning and coordination, and a shared commitment to delivering results.
While these awards are a source of tremendous pride, the true measure of the relationship extends beyond recognition. For more than 28 years, General Motors has provided Ideal Contracting with the opportunity to contribute to projects that shape the future of manufacturing, mobility, and innovation. More importantly, the relationship has enabled both organizations to work alongside generations of talented team members who have made that success possible.
Extending Our Collaboration into the Community
The impact of the relationship between General Motors and Ideal Contracting extends far beyond construction projects and facilities. It can be seen throughout Southwest Detroit, where both organizations have invested time, resources, and energy into strengthening the community.
Each year, team members from GM and Ideal come together during GM Cares Week to complete improvement projects at organizations and public spaces across Southwest Detroit. The collaboration is also evident within the Detroit Robotics Engineering Center, where students gain hands-on learning experiences, mentorship, and exposure to career opportunities that help shape their futures. It can also be found on the site of the former GM Cadillac Plant, home today to Ideal Contracting, as well as Cadillac Urban Gardens and Scarcyny Park and Gardens, places that reflect the continued transformation and reinvestment taking place in the community.
As General Motors and Ideal Contracting look toward the future, there is great excitement for what lies ahead.
